Could you qualify for medical cannabis?
Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since November 2018, but only specialist doctors can prescribe it — and most patients never hear about it from their GP. This two-minute checker explains how eligibility actually works and what your next step would be. It is general information, not a medical assessment — only a GMC-registered specialist can determine eligibility.
QUESTION 1 OF 4
Are you 18 or over?
QUESTION 2 OF 4
Do you have a diagnosed, ongoing condition?
UK clinics most commonly assess patients with conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, migraine, IBD and chemotherapy-related nausea — but condition lists vary by clinic.
QUESTION 3 OF 4
Have you already tried other treatments for it?
Specialists generally look for evidence that standard licensed treatments have been tried first — typically two or more — without adequate relief or with intolerable side effects.
QUESTION 4 OF 4
Can you access your medical records?
Clinics ask for your GP Summary Care Record to evidence your diagnosis and treatment history. You can request it free from your GP practice or via the NHS App.
Important: this checker describes how the UK system works in general terms. It does not assess you, diagnose anything, or guarantee any outcome — eligibility is always an individual clinical decision made by a GMC-registered specialist after reviewing your full history. If you're experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm, contact your GP, NHS 111, or the Samaritans on 116 123.
